Creating "Simply the Best" – genetic modification of thermophilic bacteria to improve the biotechnological process of PHA production
Lector: prof. Ing. Stanislav Obruča, Ph.D.
Institution: Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry
Field: Food Chemistry
About the project
The main protagonists of this project are the thermophilic bacteria Aneurinibacillus sp. and Caldimonas thermodepolymerans. Since both are very interesting and promising, but at the same time imperfect in a certain area, our vision is to link these two worlds, especially in terms of molecular biology and genetics. Specifically, the aim is to enhance the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates – bioplastics, which could be introduced into the industrial sphere to compete with petrochemical plastics.
Why science?
Science is a great way to avoid the stereotype, which was one of the reasons I decided to continue with my studies. In combination with a field that really interests the researcher (for me, it is a combination of microbiology, biotechnology and genetics), it can guarantee that everyday work takes on a different dimension and becomes a hobby full of challenges and surprises. Research offers a constant room for improvement, which many people may find attractive and fulfilling, including myself.
What do I like most about Brno
During my first visit to Brno (DOD at the Faculty of Chemistry) I knew that this was a city where I wanted to study. After five years, this city, which was at first only a place to study, has turned into a place to live. In short, Brno has a soul that even bigger and more tourist-attracting cities, can only be silently jealous of.
