Comprehensive model of a photobioreactor
Lector: doc. Ing. Zdeněk Jegla, Ph.D.
Institution: Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
Field: Design and Process Engineering
About the project
The project aims to provide the front-line research in the field of microalgae cultivation under controlled conditions utilizing waste CO2 gases from a waste incineration plant. The core of the project is the development of a mathematical model of a photobioreactor. The comprehensive modelling approach will include the hydrodynamic model of various phases (gas bubbles, liquid, and biomass), the mass transfer model, the radiation model, and the biomass growth model.
Why science?
The cultivation of microalgae in photobioreactors is a developing field with great industrial potential and future career opportunities. Thanks to the multidisciplinary aspect of the project, I believe that I will be able to understand the cultivation processes in a wider context. Therefore, in 10 years, I would like to have up and running a spin-off company where the outcomes of the research could be applied commercially.
What do I like most about Brno
I like about Brno the most that it can blend its student atmosphere with a great potential for growth of innovations. There are high-quality research centres, universities, and growing companies. However, since Brno is always full of students, the calendar in Brno is always packed with events to go to.
